Flag of our Forefathers
17 Years ago, almost to the day my family decided to leave Sri-Lanka behind and immigrate to Australia. Little did I realise that to this day I would not see any of my relatives since then, nor did I realise that I would lose my ability to speak sinhalese. There are two things in this world that brings out the pride and joy I have for my former land, the Sri-Lankan cricket team (when they actually play well) and the Sri-Lankan flag. Growing up I always used to think it was so "Cool" cuz it was of a Lion holding a sword, but until now I never knew what the flag actually meant, so of course I go to the place that knows everything... Wikipedia :P.
Apparently the orgin stems back to 465BC when King Vijaya, the first King of the Sinhalese people brought with him a flag with a Lion symbol, apparently this symbol plays a major role in Sinhalese history, and one of its most notable uses was when the legendary King Dutugemunu used it as a banner of victory as he led a campaign which eventually defeated the Indian King Elara who was occuyping a part of Sri-Lanka, this victory then resulted in the unification of Sri-Lanka. But of course during the British reign the flag was taken by the British and stored in the Royal Military Hospital in Chelsea and was replaced by the Union Flag until it was later discovered and published as part of the independance movement. Each part of the current flag has a particular meaning, it's primarily as a representation of the various cultural and religious mixes that make up the Sri-Lankan nation:

| The lion | The Sinhalese ethnicity |
| The bo leaves | Buddhism and its influence on the nation. They also stand for the four virtues of Kindness, Friendliness, Happiness and Equanimity. |
| The sword of the lion | The sovereignty of the nation |
| The tail of the lion | The noble eight fold path of Buddhism |
| The curly hair on the lion's head | Religious observance, wisdom and meditation |
| The beard of the lion | Purity of words |
| The handle of the sword | The elements of water, fire, air and earth |
| The nose of the lion | Intelligence |
| The two front paws of the lion | Purity in handling wealth. |
| The vertical orange stripe | The Tamil ethnicity |
| The vertical green stripe | The Muslim faith |
| The yellow border round the flag | The Buddhist Clergy |
| The crimson background | Other minor religions |

Another day.. another...
6 years to this day, a young man who had never had the courage to speak to a girl started a relationship with the girl of his dreams.
She was smart,
She was beautiful,
She made him laugh with her dodgy jokes
She made him cry with the wave of a pool cue
She admitted she loved him,
She freaked out,
She took it back
She went dramatic
He told her he loved her too
She learnt he was true
She laughed at the way wet dew on grass managed to create the most cheeky impression on cement
She cried when he had to leave
She learnt that she was beautiful,
She learnt what it was to be sexy
She made him sexy,
She was his lover.....
She no longer is any of those things,
She is now more
more beautiful, more intelligent, more sexy
She will soon be one with him
I Love You Babe
Happy 6 Year Anniversary... and yes I don't know hindi, but the world wide web can interpret for me :)
Tu Meri Zindagi Hai, Tu Meri Har Khushi Hai - 2

Anniversaries come and go..
It's that time of the year coming up again, another year that i have been with my gal which makes it our sixth. It's really an unsual feel this year, it's just been forgotten along with valentines day. At the start of the relationship they have had so much significance, it is unforgiveable if you forget an anniversary or a valentines day especially at the start of a relationship. Yet once you get settled in with someone, sometimes you get complacent and perhaps you don't feel like you need to try anymore?. Throughout the years I have woo'd Sig, wined and dined her and just when she thought after our 4th anniversary, things were slowing down and the romance was dying I gave her the anniversary of anniversaries. Starting with five stars and ending with a ring on her hand, how can I top that this year?, and quite frankly I can't. This year there is so much going on in our lives, Sig is finishing Uni, she had her job interviews and then theres that little event called the wedding happening in november and not to mention the honeymoon afterwards. This year is an emotional rollercoaster and in the end I think we will be both drained by the end of it. This year we wont be celebrating as lavishly as we did last year, we simply cannot afford to, ok who am I kidding... I cannot afford to lol. but really the anniversary just like any other day is just another day, another day that I have been with the most special person to enter my life and although we may not go all out and celebrate due to distance and other reasons, we will be thinking of each other. Six years on and she is still the first thing i think of when I wake up and the last thing on my mind as I fall asleep. That, to me, is more special than any anniversary.

A Rose By Another Other Name .. Would Smell As Sweet
Whats in a name?, a name defines us, it tell us who we are. With my upcomming nuptials coming up in November, many issues have been raised. Yes we both have different cultures, and different views. I joke to Sig about us being an interracial couple, she laughs it off, Lankans and Indians aren't any different. We may share the same colour skin and externally we make look from the same country, but our cultures are so different.
Traditionally when you get married, the woman takes on the man's name. I suppose there is a touch of chauvinism involved there, where back in the old days the man is saying that the woman now belongs to him and she should take his name as his property. So why do we still do it now?, now we say it's becuase it symbolic of two entities becoming one. But why is it always the man's name that is taken. As a male I would be adament in my refusal to take her surname to the point of being inexorable. In a sense it would be imasculating, and I know many would say this is rediculous to think this way, but in my minds eye it would be admitting to the fact that I am powerless in this relationship. In my mind I want Sig to take my name because it is her acknowledgement of being proud to bear my name, to one day have my child/children. That she is now accepting the burdeons and joys that I will experience in my life. I never doubted that she would take my name, nor did I suspect that anyone would be saddened by her losing her last name. Until I spoke to her borhter (who is in grade 6), he asked me if she would take my name. Without thinking I answered of course she would, he asked me why?. I didn't want to go into a philophical or deep and meaningful, because he is after all in grade 6 and would just be perplexed and also because he has the attention span of a kid in grade 6 lol. So I simple said that thats what just happens, but he then said no, he knew of people where the wife kept her last name, but I just simply said, no she would change her name. He simply said Oh and looked saddened. I wonder what his opinion would be when he is in my position, about to get married and his wife does not want to change her name, whether he would be willing to accpet his wife to not take his surname.
A surname is your legacy, it tells people where you came from, whereas your first name is representative of you as an individual. honestly I can't blame Sig if she does want to keep her last name because her first name is a beautiful indian name, my last name is a very typical anglo saxon name. Together they do not flow at all, and its quite an unsual combination, or perhaps its only because the name is still new in our minds and we haven't gotten used to using the two names together in the one sentence. But saying that I would be deeply hurt if she decides to not take my name, almost as if she is saying she is not accepting me into her life, I'm changing a lot for her, willing to accept her religion culture and language, her taking my name is a sense of her accepting me, of my religion and culture.
I know that this will not be the last time there will be a debate on names, our children will be something that we will continually debate. She wants our children to have Indian names whereas I want anglo saxon names. Certainly I would not mind if they have an Indian name as a middle name, but I simply don't know if I could call my children by an indian name as a first name but I think the most sensible answer that Sig eluded to was to have a an Indian name that was also a western name. To me I would have no issues with that, I think that that would be the best resolution the this matter, but thats a blog for another day.
So far Sig has never showed anything but acceptance of my last name and she has never said that she wouldn't take my last name. I personally would not blame her if in the Inidan community she used her maiden name as her last name, but it would be an honour for me if she takes my surname legally. If in the eyes of all others, legally and under God to have my surname as OUR surname, we are starting a new legacy, a new chapter in our lives, As One entity. Instead of being known as Sig and Ev's, I would love for people to know us as the Chapmans.

I remember.. my Valentine
To My Love:
I remember the first time we met, yet you never knew.
I remember the first we talked online, the first time you told me you had a crush on me.
I remember the first lunch, your hair was in pigtails and u kissed me and ran away.
I remember our first date, It was our first embrace and our first kiss.
I remember our first kiss, it was the first of many.
I remember the first time your face was the first thing I saw in th morning, It was the sweetest wake up call of all.
I remember the first time you cried in my arms, I knew then that I could never protect you from everything.
I remember our first time at the beach, How i longed to be alone with you.
I remember the first time you were scared of me, ok you've never been scared but at least pretend i'm a tough guy won't u!
I remember the first time you told me you felt fat, yet i only ever saw a Godess before me.
I remember the first time you got a haircut, though I never noticed a thing.
I remember the first time I saw your grin, I knew you were planning something evil.
I remember the first kiss for the year, there were plenty of fireworks that night.
I remember the first time you felt safe in my arms, you will always be in my arms till the day I die.
I will continue to remember... My Love... My Soulmate.
I know this sin't as sweet as a rose or as warm as a hug.
But it's all I can give you babe.
Love you always.

Dinner With a Chief
Was invited to dinner on Friday night to dinner with a man I always knew as "Chief". he's a Chief Petty officer in the navy and all those under his commander must refer to him as "Chief". Since I am a civilian contractor, I am under no obligation to refer to him by his title. Infact being an Engineer, if I was to join the navy, I would infact be his superior and he would have to refer to me as "Sir" lol. It turns out his place is a mere 8 minutes drive from my new rental apartment, how convenien. His house was amazing, on the top of the hill he can literally see the storm clouds as they gather, his house is beautifully decorated, each room with the same theme yet somehow clearly different. It has a very old england feel to it. The loung room has a fireplace, and hence was one of the main reasons that they bought the place, apparently his wife really wanted a fireplace. Why is it that women all want that fireplace, because i keep being reminded from my own signifcant other that we're getting a house with a fireplace. His house was decorated with a very old english sort of feel, very clean and everything in it's own place. He's a good 10-15 years older than me but he's very much a kid inside, and I never realised how similar we both are until he pointed it out to me. He's a Victorian and like me love his old home, an Essendon supporter as well as worshipping the ground james Hird walks on. He also loves stargate and we are both Dell fanatics, so with plenty in common we had plenty to talk about during dinner, including some politics occuring at my old work place, and suggestions that my position was not fought for by my supervisor because she wanted to takeover as the only engineer in the building. This didnt phase me, I am good enough to forge out my career anywhere I choose, and I know that she probably doesn't have as much options on the table for her as I did. The evening and dinner was great, it was good to spend some time with some friends and just sit down and chat. It's good to have developed a friendship in my time in JEWOSU, infact I walked away from that place with 3 really close friends.

A New Horizon
Its been ages since I last wrote my blog, and this is partly due to my own laziness. I will say its because I am lazy or because I am back at home with my parents for holidays and am stuck with dial up internet. But truth is I am a very lazy indivdual, also because I think I try and do too many things at once. That is a problem of mine in that I want to do everything at once and only end up doing a little bit of everything half done. I think its because I am so intersted in so many things and I suppose because I am pretty good at so many things that I try to do them all at once. My gift is also my curse unfortunately :(.
Now is the time for both reflecting and predicting, reflecting on the year gone before me and predicting the future this new year has in store for me. Since I am a person that chooses not to stay in the past I figure I will take a gander into the future. So here is what I can see in my crystal ball:
January:
Sad and exciting in that I will leave Melbourne once again to forge my career in another state. I will leave behind my family and most importantly my soul mate. It gets hard everytime I leave and as soon as I get to Adelaide we start the countdown to when we see each other next. Exciting because I will be moving into a house with a backyard and a garage and I will be living will my best mate of the furry four legged kind. Living alone again will be somewhat of a blessing, don't get me wrong, a house mate is great but there are things you wanna do that you cant with a housemate wround. If you catch my drift :).
February:
Valentine's Day, My Gal's B'Day and our second enagagement party (this time for our friends). I think this will be the party month, mainly for my boo, it will be her final month b4 uni and her final month of holidays b4 she starts her career in the big bad world. Gotta start thinking about what gift to get her for her b'day... or maybe I already have it ;).
March:
Other than the start of the footy season I have nothing else to look forwards to. Lucky for me when the fotty finishes the cricket season starts. Unlike for Cameron who is faced with life without footy for 5 months. Ahh how boring life would be without sport.
April:
Anzac Day, Essendon vs Collingwood. One of my life's to do list is to attend an Anzac Day class between these two clubs, two of melbourne's oldest and greatest clubs, what could be better?. Maybe being at the 'G, watching Essendon win a permiership against Carlton by 1 point. (I Hate Carlton SO MUCH!!!!). Easter is always a good time of the year as well, although I am not so much into chocolate as I used to be. I face the possibility of an Easter without my boo as she might be in India at the time buying her bridal Sari and possibly my gear as well.
May:
May is always a special month, May is our month. 15th May will be our 6 year anniversary, and what a beautiful 6 years it has been. Amazing I haven't driven her mad yet.... I say yet.... :).
June:
Start of winter and also judgement day for me interms of work. Around this time of year my company has it's annual performance reviews. My last one went exceptionally well and I hope this years to be the same or better (thats the type of person I am). A good performance means recognitions and rewards (i.e. a raise). Normally I am not a man concerned with money and raises, but considering I am about to start a new life with a special someone, I need to start focussing on achieving my life goals and getting the success that so many expect of me.
July:
Nopt so much a big month for me, but for Sig it is. She will finish Uni. Six and a half years of hard work will finally be realised and I know it's a day she has been longing for and dreading. I know you'll do well babe, I believe in you :).
August:
With exams done, my boo and I will start planning heavily for our wedding. It will be a hectic time, deciding what we want, what we will do, what we will wear, who we want to attend sigh. Already I can feel the stress mounting.
September:
My fathers birthday, he will be 51 this year. Not so special as last year but every birthday is special as you get older. Living away from home makes you appreciate special people in your life, I definitely appreciate everything he has done and I plan to show him that this year. My final year as an unmarried man. The AFL grand final will also be played on that last Saturday in September, ahhhh, is it too ambitious to hope that Essendon will be there for James Hird's final year in the no. 5 jumper for the Bombers?.
October:
25!!!!... I can't believe I will be 25 in October!!... how can this be?. It was only yesterday that I was in first year Uni. The days are a blur, I can already feel my body getting slower and stiffer. I don't have the energy I used to, the speed, flexibility and agility have been replced with brute strength and power as well as wisdom.
November:
The day is nigh. That one special day in a couple's lives as we walk around that fire 7 times, for 7 promises. Lets hope I can remeber them all :P. We are planning our honeymoon to be in Italy, the problem at the moment is raising the cash for the trip. But if we can do it, I know it will be an amazing trip.
December:
Ahhh Life as a family, it will be weird having someone sleeping next to you every night, but she will be a welcome guest I assure you. Christmas with my new extended family and another new years to reflect on the year that has come and gone.
What a year in 2007
